Position Description:
Relay telephone calls between Deaf, Hearing Impaired, and Speech Impaired consumers (TTY users) and Hearing consumers through the telephone network.
Essential Functions:
- Accept and place local and long distance relay calls for consumers.
- Follow desired method of billing instructions and enter billing information into the system.
- Translate electronic messages to voice messages and voice messages to electronic messages.
- Translate sentence structures and language patterns from New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) to English and English to (NZSL) to ensure the correct message is relayed.
- Convey the caller’s actual feelings and emotions.
- Relay contents of the call as accurately as possible without intervening in the conversation.
- Maintain strict consumer confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- Typing skill of 60 WPM using a personal computer upon graduation of training.
- Good use of English grammar and spelling.
- Good articulation and pleasing speaking voice.
- Ability to tolerate the stress of emotional dialogues.
- Ability to learn New Zealand Sign Language syntax.
- Sensitivity to consumer needs.
