French Creole Bilingual Communication Assistant

Position Description:
Communication Assistant will be providing telecommunication services to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech disabled callers across the nation.  Bilingual French Creole speaking Communication Assistants to relay conversations between French Creole speaking TTY users and voice telephone users.


Essential Functions:

  • Accept and place local and long distance relay calls for consumers.
  • Follow desired method of billing instructions and enter billing information into the system.
  • Translate electronic messages to voice messages and voice messages to electronic messages.
  • Translate sentence structures and language patterns from American Sign Language (ASL) to French Creole and French Creole to ASL to ensure the correct message is relayed.
  • Convey the caller’s actual feelings and emotions.
  • Relay contents of the call as accurately as possible without intervening in the conversation.
  • Maintain strict consumer confidentiality.


Qualifications:

  • Typing skill of 50+ WPM using a personal computer.
  • Good use of French Creole and English grammar and spelling.
  • Speaks French Creole
  • Good articulation and pleasing speaking voice.
  • Ability to tolerate the stress of emotional dialogues.
  • Ability to learn ASL syntax.
  • Sensitivity to consumer needs.
  • High level of professionalism and confidentiality
  • High School Diploma or GED
